For the past few days my Writer's Craft class has been looking at poetry. Today we were asked to look at poems and pick one to put on our blog, I picked this one by Shel Silverstein for a few different reasons. As a child he was the only poetry author I used to read and remember and I remember this poem as well; when I read it just now I realized that the person feels better naked and I never really realized that that's what the poem was talking about, so that came as a bit of a shock when I finally re-read it. I also thought it was quite fitting; I hate clothes and figuring out what to wear and everything I put on seems so uncomfortable and I; much like the person in the poem, would rather just not ever have to wear clothes because I pretty much hate them. So please enjoy a little piece of your childhood while you come to the realization that you're about 10 to 12 years older than you were when you originally read this.
Tryin' On Clothes
I tried on the farmer's hat,
Didn't fit...
A little too small -- just a bit
Too floppy.
Couldn't get used to it,
Took it off.
I tried on the dancer's shoes,
A little too loose.
Not the kind you could use
for walkin'.
Didn't feel right in 'em,
Kicked 'em off.
I tried on the summer sun,
Felt good.
Nice and warm -- knew it would.
Tried the grass beneath bare feet,
Felt neat.
Finally, finally felt well dressed,
Nature's clothes fit me best.
